The Silent Guardian — Chapter 25, Part 2: The Escape Route

This installment continues The Silent Guardian Series. Previous: Chapter 25, Part 1: The Cliffs.

I exhale slowly and let the pounding in my chest subside. I signal for Clara and Xia to continue.

The ledge above gets closer, yet my talisman remains unresponsive. I hope the transport window hasn’t opened. It can’t—we’re not close enough. I signal Clara and Xia to hurry. Urgency is a tightening noose. Moving faster might make too much noise—but we must.

At last, my fingers find the edge of the cliff. I haul myself up with one final effort, then help them over the top. The light is blinding after our shaded ascent; however, there’s no time to adjust. We’re exposed now.

Once on level ground, I hold up a single finger—one minute left. Clara and Xia read the message printed in my expression. We break into a sprint, feet slamming against the stone path as we race toward the Erechtheion. Every second stretches thin, each heartbeat louder, the world narrowing to our desperate race.

The talisman stirs in my pocket. Its presence is impossible to ignore. At first, it’s merely warmth against my skin. It quickly builds, spreading outward like a living pulse. Once again, we are connected. Through the fabric, I feel its energy thrumming, anchoring me even as violence threatens to erupt around us. The time-travel window is open.

I don’t hesitate. I reach out for Clara’s and Xia’s shoulders. In that instant, I glimpse the shimmering tapestry of time—past and future unfolding before me. Every possibility waits, ready to be chosen.

A deafening crack tears through the air before I can fix on a destination. The serene morning shatters, splintering into jagged fragments of chaos.

I yank time back, forcing everything to slow to a crawl. A shot tears through the air. I reach Xia and pull her aside, but the round still catches her shoulder.

She stumbles in pain, grabbing her injured shoulder as I move toward her.

I grab Xia’s arm and pull her closer as shouts erupt behind us. Another shot strikes the ground nearby. I block out the chaos and focus on getting us away.

There’s no time for panic. No time for fear. I concentrate, opening the gateway through time again. Clara drops to her knees to tend to Xia. I clasp her arm, linking the three of us together. The air shifts; the world dissolves.

We are sliding through time’s steady current. The overwhelming haze of 2051 fades, replaced by something calmer.

The transition feels gentle when we land. The air is lighter. My first breath feels clean, a reprieve from the suffocating future where the Phylax’s time lock twists everything into ruin. Finally, we’re out of the nightmare.

Relief is short-lived. Clara kneels beside Xia, using a strip of fabric torn from her sleeve to create pressure on Xia’s shoulder. Her hands are steady despite the crimson staining her fingers.

My lips form the word I intend to shout: Xia! I am unable to make a sound.

Around us, hundreds of tourists wander the Acropolis, cameras in hand, their laughter and idle chatter a jarring contrast to the chaos we left. The ancient ruins, now swarming with life, stand untouched by the horrors to come. It’s hard to believe that this place will be swallowed by the Phylax’s tyranny in a few short decades.

The sounds of the bustling crowd ground me, even though it is nothing more than a fragile veneer. Xia’s condition is urgent. Clara’s determined hands don’t falter as she works to stem the bleeding. We’ve escaped one battle, yet the war against the Phylax’s dystopia is far from over. First, we must ensure Xia lives.
