The Silent Guardian — Chapter 24, Part 1: The Singular Timeline

This installment continues The Silent Guardian Series. Previous: Chapter 23, Part 3: The Chamber.

The door creaks open; an officer steps inside, flanked by two guards. Both keep their weapons locked on me. The officer’s face is a grotesque mask of sharp angles and sunken hollows. His cheekbones jut out like blades beneath papery skin. The suspended light casts deep shadows into the recesses of his eye sockets, making the orbits seem cavernous. His lips are stretched over yellowed teeth, pulled into a cruel grimace. He stands with arms crossed, his bony fingers tapping against his sleeve. I am nothing more than defective equipment to him.

“So,” he begins. “Who are you? What’s your purpose in this city?” He lets the question linger. “Why were you following the Phylax soldiers?”

His lips tighten. He’s clearly used to captives crumbling at the first show of force. However, I sense something in him—not a man made of stone. He wears a plastic mask of an expression. I’m not afraid of him. My concern lies elsewhere, with the talisman’s pulse in my pocket, calling me to something far more significant than whatever game he’s playing here.

He waits a few seconds before his patience snaps. His fist crashes into my jaw, jerking me to the side. Still, I keep my lips sealed. Another blow follows, this time to my ribs. Pain flares through me. I refuse to give him the pleasure of a reaction. His frustration mounts with each unanswered attack. I anchor my focus on the talisman’s steady pulse.

In my peripheral vision, the room wavers. The walls warp with a convex distortion. The anomaly creeps in at the edges of my perception, threatening to yank me away. I fight the urge to dive into it.

“Interesting,” the officer murmurs. He gestures for the guards to step forward. Hands claw at my shirt, tearing it away. They unhook the handcuffs from the table and shove me against the wall, then secure me to a set of chains dangling from the ceiling. A lever groans, pulling my arms upward until discomfort flares in my shoulders.

Then, the officer’s vision falls on my arm, where the marred Phylax insignia stains my flesh. He freezes, shock spreading across him. He steps back. “Notify the Council immediately,” he barks to the guards, his composure slipping.

As I stand shackled to the wall, the room starts to distort again. I cannot fight it this time. The cracked paint melts into brilliance. The talisman’s pulse grows stronger. With the guards gone, I let the interrogation chamber dissolve into the background.

The kaleidoscope of fractured images flares to life. Swirling patterns writhe, animated with a life of their own. Light fractures into shards, colors bleed together, then dissolve into darkness. The whispers return; an incoherent fog encroaches. As suddenly as it started, the chaos stops. The kaleidoscope snaps shut, leaving me standing in the Sanctum.

Braziers line the edges of the perfectly circular chamber. Their flames cast a dancing glow across murals of triumph etched into the stone walls. At the center, a raised platform gleams with ancient carvings. The two-headed serpents coil toward infinity, embedded in gold and silver. The polished green marble floor beneath my feet seems to shimmer with a secret of its own. The setting feels impossibly real, more vivid than the grim chamber I know I occupy in another layer of reality.

A sudden, unseen force drags me forward. I’m thrust into a chamber I’ve never seen before. In the center of this spectral room stands a massive machine, alive with humming energy. Metal surfaces gleam as gears and wires writhe.

Six cloaked figures encircle the device, their forms wavering in the hazy glow of the room. The Archon stands at the forefront, locking his attention on the machine as its hum pulses through the air. The others are shrouded until a flash of light reveals one. Something about how he juts his face forward and tilts it at an awkward angle—the stillness in his stance—strikes me as hauntingly familiar. I think I know him. I latch onto the image, but in the next instant, the light shifts. He’s swallowed back into darkness.

Someone I expect to see next to the Archon steps forward. Philip. The machine lights his skin with a sickening green glow. The Archon’s words captivate him.

“The time lock is operational,” the Archon declares. “All timelines have collapsed into a singularity. Travel will remain shut down except when we allow it.” Pride seeps into his voice, “ The Convergence of Dominion is successful. Our power is now unbreakable.”

I once read about forced wavefunction collapse in quantum mechanics—how particles exist in multiple states until an external force locks them into one. If you apply that concept to entire timelines, then maybe the Phylax machine chooses a single outcome, forcing all probabilities to collapse into one fixed reality. The ultimate convergence.

The editing machine must be how the specifics of this world were created. The Phylax manipulated events, stored them somehow, and the convergence fuses it all together. If they’ve merged them thoroughly, then time itself has been reforged into a single trunk, with all other branches forcibly absorbed into this one unbreakable thread. No wonder the world changed so quickly. What remains is a singular narrative, sculpted by the Phylax and upheld by their machine.
