The Silent Guardian — Chapter 17, Part 3: Indoctrination

This installment continues The Silent Guardian Series. Previous: Chapter 17, Part 2: The Doctrine.

I press my back against the wall, watching my younger self among the children. He rigidly sits, hanging onto every word as gospel. Indoctrination—that’s all this ever was. Conquer the minds of the young, and loyalty becomes inevitable. They rewrote our thoughts before we even had a chance to think for ourselves.

The priest signs, We are the architects of humanity’s survival. Through sacrifice, we endure. Through silence, we are strong.

I force myself to keep watching as the children respond in quick, mechanical gestures:

With fidelity, we protect humanity.

With fidelity, we protect humanity.

My skin crawls as I watch myself sign the words. He’s too young to comprehend them entirely, but he believes every syllable. These words will become his reality.

I want to scream at him—at myself—to stop, to wake up. The boy sits there as the lie sinks deeper into him with every repetition. Somewhere deep in the pit of my stomach, I know the boy doesn’t stand a chance.

The children rise from their seats in choreographed unity. One by one, they file toward the back of the church, guided by adults bearing lifeless expressions. I slip from my hiding spot, following at a distance. I don’t remember this.

A narrow corridor stretches into nothingness at the rear of the church. The adults escort the children into small rooms along the hallway. After a few minutes, the adults slip down the hall. The sounds of their footsteps fade to nothing, leaving the church eerily quiet.

I stop at the room where my younger self is contained. I crack the door open enough to peer inside. The overhead light reveals bare walls, a thin mattress on the floor, and a single metal chair facing a wall.

A knot tightens in my stomach. I cannot recall this. Apparently, lessons from the pulpit were only a first step. The actual conditioning happened here, in these tiny rooms, out of sight from anyone who might question it. This room is where they broke me.

I stare at the horrifying sight. My younger self sits slumped in the metal chair. His forehead is strapped into a crude contraption that forces him to fixate on the wall, his nose inches away from it. His tiny body is limp. Eyes half-lidded as if caught between sleep and waking. Tubes trail from his arms, feeding something into his system that keeps him docile.

On the wall, a video plays in an endless loop. Images flash in rapid succession, burning themselves into his subconscious. The Phylax symbol appears first. Then, the Acropolis gleams under a bright sky. It is an emblem of power. Phylax armies march with emotionless determination. Victory. Strength. Sacrifice. The rhythm of the video is a hammer striking.

Why is the Sanctum in this video? If these are Renegades, why highlight the centerpiece of the Phylax’s power?

A voice drones over the images, weaving promises into commands. “The Phylax will never lie to you. Never trust anyone outside the Phylax. Emotions are distractions; they must be controlled. The Phylax is infallible. Never break the silence. Obedience without hesitation ensures survival.”

My nails dig into my palms. These were the rules that bound me. They were my commandments, my creed, shaping everything I did. Here it is: the blueprint of my existence, reduced to flickering images on a screen.

Brainwashing is a slow erosion. The Phylax made us repeat a lie until it became the truth. They stripped away what we were and replaced it with what benefits them. The mind can only hold so much before it overflows, and that’s what they count on. Fill a person’s head with enough of the same message, and eventually, new thoughts replace the old.

Psychologists say the brain is a system that constantly absorbs, adapts, and rewrites. The Phylax weaponized this idea. They didn’t need to erase who I was. They buried it. They flooded my mind with their version of the world, their truths, and their commandments until there was no room for anything else. No space left for doubt. They filled my head with an unquestionable righteousness of our mission. When I finally accepted it, I became their creation.

Rage. They made me believe these lies through twisted repetition. Through punishment, the vow became inseparable from my identity. When I sat in that chair, I was no longer my own person.

I watch as the boy twitches with confusion. His eyelids flutter as each new image is forced into his brain. Meanwhile, I stand here, fully awake, my anger burning brighter than ever.

There are two more things I need to see here in this retched place—two final pieces that might help me stitch together the shattered fragments of my past. I must witness the beginning of it all, starting with my arrival at the compound. After that, I’ll confront the Temptation. Maybe then, the pieces will finally fit.

I return to the nave, where the children file in after their conditioning. It is darker now, and the echoes of their footsteps sound emptier. I let the present dissolve, peeling back the layers of time to find the beginning.

Time swirls around me. I must focus. I need to see when I first arrived. I peer deeper, trying to ignore other events that happened here. I’m sure there are many other secrets. And then—

There it is.

Time snaps into place, pulling me to the memory I’ve been searching for. The echoes of the present dissolve, leaving the raw, unfiltered past. I’m five years old—small, scared, and shaken from being torn away from everything I knew.

This is where it all started. This was my first moment with the Phylax. I’m unsure what frightens me more—what I’ll find here or the person I might become when I confront it.
