The Silent Guardian — Chapter 28, Part 2: The Archon

This installment is part of The Silent Guardian Series.

Distrust pricks at the back of my consciousness; however, we need him for this. The second his fingers wrap around the talisman, it glows more brightly. I am awestruck when the worn carvings on the temple walls illuminate in response to the talisman. It takes a moment for the light to die down again. It strikes me as interesting that I met the Archon not that long ago, but he hasn’t had that encounter yet. For him, it’s still far into the future. It’s a twisted moment outside the flow of time. The version of him walking these corridors is still on a path that leads to the Sigma Event. Will our actions here alter humanity’s history? Or has this always been a part of it? We wait until footsteps echo throughout the corridor—the Archon. Just beyond our hiding spot, he pauses. I hear the rustling of his movements. When he finally enters the room, he doesn’t notice us. I give a quick signal to Clara, Xia, and the merchant. We rush forward as one. The merchant lifts the talisman high. A blinding pulse of energy rips through the room. The Archon stumbles, and shock contorts his features. I see it dawn on him in that instant: he’s trapped. The talisman severs his ability to manipulate time as the merchant promised. Before the Archon can recover his bearings, Clara and Xia spring forward, forcing him to the ground. I secure his limbs with the rope we brought. We drag him onto a stone bench in the corner, where he glares up at us. Rage burns in his eyes. For the first time, the Archon—the leader of the Phylax—sits powerless before me. A cold jolt of satisfaction courses through my veins. At last, he’s the one at our mercy. Despite his predicament, the Archon regards us with unsettling calm, barely registering the ropes that bind him. A smirk tugs at the corner of his mouth as he calculates how to twist our weaknesses to his advantage. “So,” he patronizes, “you believe you can force something from me?” Arrogance is a foul stench clinging to him. He’s certain we’re wasting our time. Despite the satisfaction of capturing him, his smug attitude annoys me. He is the architect of my suffering. Despite losing his power, he maintains a confident air. I step closer, trying to curb my anger. Clara’s voice slices through his amusement when she says what I’m thinking. “Tell us how to destroy the time lock,” she demands. The Archon’s laugh is humorless. “Why would I do that?” He oozes condescension. “Do you think you can change the Order of Time? You are nothing compared to the Phylax. We have shaped every important truth you have ever known. We control humanity’s future.” Beside me, Xia grips her dagger. She holds the blade close, her voice deadly serene. “Talk,” she warns, “or this ends now.” The Archon’s composure barely wavers. He gives a short, mirthless chuckle. “You wouldn’t dare. Killing me won’t alter a thing.” His tone is ice. “You still won’t know how to disable the lock, a new Archon will ascend, and the world will still belong to the Phylax.” The Archon’s sneer deepens. “Oh, Silanus, I expected more from you. Yet here you are, siding with this motley rabble. Pathetic. I always knew you’d fail us when it mattered. Isn’t that my talisman you are holding?” The Archon tilts forward. His grim smile widens. “Hear that?” he asks, gloating. “My guards. Your time is up. You’ll all die here.” I catch it, too—the sound of boots slamming against stone, rushing toward us. Five Phylax guards spill into the room with their weapons raised. My pulse thunders in my ears. I shift my stance, ready for the fight. Clara and Xia do the same, bracing for the onslaught. Silanus steps back, gripping the glowing talisman tighter. Its light intensifies as he channels its power, providing enough illumination for the battle.

“The Archon’s not going anywhere,” he says, barely audible in the surge of motion. “I’ll keep him locked down. You know what you need to do.” I rush forward, adrenaline igniting me. The Archon’s laughter rings out as the chamber erupts into chaos. Metal crashes against metal. Sparks flare. Clara blocks a strike while Xia knocks one attacker off balance. I parry another blow and force a guard back. Around us, the ancient walls throw distorted shadows of the struggle. Xia moves with precision, disabling one opponent and turning immediately toward the next. I charge the remaining guards, relying on years of training to keep them away from Clara and the Archon. One falls hard to the ground. Another rushes me with desperate aggression.
