The Silent Guardian — Chapter 24, Part 3: The Way Home
This installment continues The Silent Guardian Series. Previous: Chapter 24, Part 2: Xia's Vision.
I gesture toward the hallway, indicating that I haven’t reached her room yet. Before we leave, Xia grips my arm. “I know how to get home,” her voice is urgent. “I saw it in a vision. This place showed me the way back. I don’t know how, but I know it’ll work.”
I place my fingers on her shoulder and give a brief nod. It’s enough to let her know I understand the importance of her discovery, but there is no time for details. We need to find Clara.
Xia and I race down the hallway toward the room where we believe they hold Clara. When we fling it open, the sight of her hurts me. Clara sits slumped in a chair, head tilted downward. Her face is a tapestry of bruises. She’s alone, her breathing shallow, eyes half-open and distant. She is lost in another place. I rest a hand on her arm. Xia kneels, gently shaking her.
I try to call Clara’s name. My voice fails me again.
“Clara,” Xia begs, “Come back to us.”
For a long moment, Clara remains unresponsive. Then, her eyelids flutter. The haze clears. Confusion drifts across her features.
“You’re here,” she murmurs, relief threading through her ragged voice. “I… I saw…” Her words fade. We silently agree the details can wait.
We stagger down the corridor together, battered but alive. Adrenaline keeps our legs moving. By the time we near the entrance, the talisman’s thrum fades to nothingness. We’ve left the anomaly behind, returning to the harsh reality of this dystopia.
Pausing at the entryway, we hear footsteps coming down another hallway. I toss one gun to Clara and the other to Xia. I take cover around the corner, gesturing for them to do the same on the other side. We brace ourselves, drawing on our last reserves of strength.
When they come at us, I grab the first guard, slamming him into the wall, his weapon clattering away. Xia pokes from behind her corner, firing two swift shots, each finding its mark.
Another guard rushes Clara. She evades him and counters, while two others fire toward us. We return fire from cover and force the remaining guards back.
Once again, there is calm at the entrance.
We burst into the early morning air at a full sprint. We weave through alleys, never daring to glance back. The city begins to stir around us, its muffled hum growing as the day awakens. Finally, we stumble into a deserted courtyard, collapsing behind a low wall, lungs burning.
We wait long enough to steady ourselves before walking back into the alleys, retracing our route toward the abandoned building we used as a hideout. The first light of day stretches across the streets. There are fewer patrol routes this early. It helps us hold onto hope.
When we are inside the safehouse, Clara drifts toward the broken window and surveys the street below. She sits with her hands clasped in her lap, fingers twitching. Her jaw stays tight, the words locked behind her teeth. Whatever she saw in the anomaly had left its mark. She holds onto something distant, shaded by fear. She rubs her temples absently.
When Xia asks, “Is everything okay?” Clara flinches.
Xia waits with concern. Clara opens her mouth, then closes it again. Again, she retreats into herself, folding deeper into sullenness. Clara isn’t ready to share—not yet. She is always the voice of hope, but her words falter, leaving an unsettling void.
I sit on an old cushion and pull out my notebook. My pen scratches frantically, writing down everything I can recall from the anomaly: the scattered fragments about a time lock, the Sigma Event, and the Phylax achieving absolute dominion. The idea of a timeline singularity hovers.
Xia watches me closely while I note the details about scattered anomalies across Earth. They’re unstable pockets of reality where we slip into something beyond the ordinary. I’m sure Clara felt it, too, though I can’t guess what visions might haunt her now.
Xia sits beside me, fixed on my notes. “I saw something, too,” she says. “I heard them talking about traveling to the past. I was eavesdropping on their meeting. They mentioned the next transportation period is coming in two days, at eleven AM. It lasts two minutes. We will need to be near the Sanctum. If we miss it, I think we’ll be trapped here for a very long time.”
My eyebrows raise as I write, The talisman will alert us when that moment arrives. Two minutes isn’t much of time. We have to be there.
Clara remains at the window, her back to us, lost in her own turbulence. Xia moves close to her. “Clara,” she asks softly, “did you experience anything in the anomaly?”
Clara’s shoulders tense. I think she won’t answer. Then, still facing the glass, she snaps, “I don’t remember.” She is brittle. This is a side of her I have not yet seen. Xia stays seated by Clara’s side, doing everything she can to soothe her. Clara will talk when she is ready.
