The Silent Guardian — Chapter 23, Part 2: Captured

This installment continues The Silent Guardian Series. Previous: Chapter 23, Part 1: Into the City.

We glide through the city, silhouettes skimming along deserted alleys. I glimpse the outlines of the Phylax agents as they pass beneath stuttering streetlights. I signal to Clara and Xia. We close in, carefully maintaining our cover.

Their path leads us deeper into Athens, through a maze of twisting narrow streets. The buildings loom overhead, their crooked forms pushing in as if herding us into some forgotten alcove of history. I notice that the windows are boarded up. Each road takes us further into obscurity.

Every so often, pairs of Phylax sentries emerge from the main thoroughfares. At the first hint of them, we melt behind dumpsters, half-collapsed fences, and rusted metal doors.

When one pair gets too close, we stop and brace ourselves against an alley wall. Only a thin shrub separates them from us. We can smell the tang of gin on their breath. They pass without speaking, their footsteps heavy on the cracked pavement.

Out here, the drones seem absent from this part of the city as if it’s too remote or inconsequential for their circuits. Clara’s relaxed grin has given way to a tense mask. Xia’s habitual caution intensifies, her focus cutting through the gloom. I feel my own nerves tightening.

Then the figures we’re tailing slow down, halting beneath a streetlight. We also stop, hopping into a pile of crumbling bricks to observe our surroundings. A subtle movement in my periphery draws my attention. To the right, figures slide into view. It’s as if they have stepped out of the masonry.

A trap.

Before we have time to strategize, chaos erupts. Clara moves first, driving one attacker backward before pivoting to stop another. The sudden counterattack gives us a moment of space.

Xia moves in a blur, driving two attackers back with quick, controlled strikes.

I swing at the closest figure, my knuckles colliding with his chin, the impact sending a jolt up my arm. He drops.

More figures emerge, swarming us in a tidal wave. The air fills with the sound of cursing. I duck as an elbow flies toward my face, countering with a hard shove that sends my attacker sprawling over a pile of rubble.

Clara fights fiercely despite being outnumbered. She slips one attack, counters another, and keeps moving as the group tries to surround her.

Xia catches an attacker mid-swing and redirects him, using the opening to keep the others at a distance.

More of them close in, overwhelming us with sheer numbers. I feel rough hands grab my shoulder, yanking me backward. I twist, throwing an elbow into someone’s ribs. Before I can follow through, another set of fingers clamp down on my arm. Cold metal bites into my wrists. I hear the click of restraints locking into place.

Clara snarls as someone else grabs her. Her voice cuts through the chaos, “You’ll regret this!”

She twists violently, her inhalations coming in sharp bursts, but the numbers are too great. Even as they shackle her wrists, she jerks against the restraints, her glare burning with raw defiance.

I wrench against the bindings, frustration boiling over as they rip victory from our grasp. We fought hard. It wasn’t enough. As they force a hood over my head, Clara calls out, “Xia, any brilliant ideas?”

Xia doesn’t answer immediately. I can hear her struggle. “Not yet,” she shouts. “Stay ready.”

Rage surges. How could I have missed this? The Pied Piper led us, unwitting rats, into a trap. I believed myself too experienced to be so easily tricked.

I feel a sharp yank at my wrists. We’re on the move. They shove us forward. We stumble blindly over uneven ground. It is impossible to guess where we’re going. Every turn disorients me further, my sense of direction slipping away as we’re herded through the streets. It’s deliberate, I realize. They want us confused. We’re at their mercy. They know it.

Eventually, we’re marched inside a building and forced to a stop. Through the shroud, I catch the pungent stench of mildew, stale cigarette smoke, and something sour lurking underneath. The foul odors cling to the back of my throat.

Suddenly, they rip away my hoodwink. I blink into a dimly lit interior. The floor is bare concrete, and broken chairs are shoved haphazardly against cracked walls.

Clara speaks with a hiss, “Aren’t the Phylax obnoxious about order? What kind of place is this?”

She’s right. Whoever runs this place isn’t interested in official procedure. They have free rein here, which means no limits to what they might do.

They march us down a narrow concrete hallway lined with doors on both sides. Through some of them, I hear faint screams that send my stomach twisting. It’s a grim preview of what we might endure. Before the guards shove me into a separate room, I catch a final glimpse of them forcing Clara and Xia into their own chambers. Clara’s fear is etched on her. Xia assesses everything that she can. Heavy doors slam, cutting them off from me.
